Ninja Verses

The comic for September 18, 2006.

People who otherwise thrive on obscurity wrote to me in puzzlement about this one. They knew about Talk Like a Pirate Day, but the rest left them mystified.

Search the internet for 'left frontal lobe of the sky demon' and you have some explanation: This is the Pirate Captain, a villain from the Doctor Who story Pirate Planet. The 'sky demon' business is one of the Captain's signature lines. (The story was written by Douglas Adams, who went on to be the late writer who had once written The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy.)

Having drawn the Captain, I didn't think there was quite enough happening. I could have added Mister Fibuli or Arthur Dent, but I decided to take it in entirely another direction: The judges are rating the contestant's pirate lingo. The Captain's scores are good but not great.

REGULAR NINJA VS. "TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY" NINJA

"TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY" NINJA [THE CAPTAIN]: BY THE LEFT FRONTAL LOBE OF THE SKY DEMON!

[THE JUDGES HOLD UP CARDS INDICATING THE SCORE THEY ASSIGN TO THE UTTERANCE. FOR EXAMPLE, ONE JUDGE ASSIGNS A SCORE OF 7.2.]
